Default Headlights

Guys, everything is working well electrically....this week. My headlights seem dim. I think it's just me because we are all used to halogen, xenon, led, whatever lights now. My 63 roadster has your typical sylvania sealed beams on her. Has anyone tried anything else that looks stock but may be brighter. Not that I drive her much at night but hey once and a while....

Thanks
Frankie

Yes, put halogens in R66 and made a dramatic difference. I only put them in the high/low beams as we don't drive much at night either and figured didn't need to put too much more load on the 51 year old wiring. Have had no problems.

Thanks Ron, what brand did you buy or do you have a link?

Sylvania or Wagner H5001 and H5006 will do all 4 headlights...
Halogens are not that big a current draw over incandescent bulbs.....there was a chart showing amperage here at one time (can't find it) -- but they are real close...

The oem bulbs were as effective as a flashlight and unsafe to use at night. Shortly after I purchased my NCRS 67, I installed the halogen lights from Zip and I've been very happy with them. Wife and I will take a ride after dinner and by the time we are headed home I have the lights on and they are much better and look like the originals.

Frankie has the key there. I got ours, Wagner H5006, a the local parts store or Rock Auto, I don't remember right now (getting old). I think they were $5 or $6 each.
I can't see well at dark any more, yep OLD, but they do just fine. I have had them in the 68RS for 20+ years and have had no problem with them.
I hear the new LEDs are brighter, but I don't like being blinded by cars on the road and don't want to blind the guy coming at me. It is mostly caused by people putting them in and not properly adjusting them or Azz Holes that don't care about the other guy. Make sure you check the adjustment after you change any light bulb please.

LED light dispersion is indeed a problem....there is one version now that has the reflectors sort of 'hooded' horizontally about 1/2 way down to keep the light out of opposing driver's eyes. You can see this effect in the outboard low beams in the first picture. The inboard lights are the high beams -- halogen and you can see the difference in brightness.

The second picture shows how the beams are focused (although 25' is considered the true test) and directed and the last picture is at dusk.....not cheap but my night vision is crap too. Haven't had any opposing drivers blink their lights at me that the LEDs were in their face...

The LEDs use the factory wiring and headlight switch - no relays...

Frankie may have the ticket on LEDs. They do cost a quite a little more from what I have seen.
Whatever you do, save the old original bulbs, especially the high/lows, as the trailer queen owners want them for NCRS judging from what I hear.
You may even be able to recoup the cost of the new lights and buy a couple of 12 packs or steak dinner by selling your original bulbs.

Take those original T3s and put clear silicone all around the rear electrodes and they won't suck in air the next time somebody fires them up and pop like a flashbulb...

fjd,

One additional consideration to take full advantage of your stock wiring when you switch to your halogen headlights is to add 2 relays, one for the low beams and one for the highs. I did this to my '65 using the kit bought from Mad Electrical. Here's a link to their site and specific article on why relays will improve your lighting.

Worth the read. Good luck!

Jim
