I’m confused as to why there continues to be discussion about electrical issues when the OP says an IR gun says his temp is rising quickly when he throttles. I must be missing something.
That's why I don't think it's a heating problem. It wouldn't cool down that quickly as soon as you let the revs off either.
You have it right. Nearly 18V at running speeds is a runaway (and dangerous) generator - basically "full fielded".
That's the problem... Some folks don't realize that, unlike an alternator, a generator has to reach a certain number of RPMs to start performing fully. Hence the idle temp indicates low voltage to the gauges and goes batcrap when the engine speed increases...
I would bet this happens revving the engine with the car not even moving.
The OP should verify the replacement voltage regulator functions properly, if its a repro it could be as bad as what he already has -- some of them are awful...and non-adjustable..

You should never see 18 volts or anything close to it. Regardless of how many problems may be going on here, this needs a cure. You have a stuck regulator. Change it.

I agree with all of you, Voltage is out of control. I have a hard time believing it's a heating issue. Temp just changes too fast. Without the car moving, and raising the rpm's, the temp rises quickly, and as soon as I let it go back to idle, temp goes right back down. At idle temp will stay normal all day long. Find it hard to believe temp would rise and fall so quickly.
BTW, Yesterday was my first test drive since I started a full frame off restoration almost 15 years ago. Just drove down my street and back because of temp issue. Kinda of surprised me a bit, as I've been running the car in garage without any temp issues but just at idle speeds mostly.
Oh well, always something...
Thanks,
Mark
As always.....65GGvert, dplotkin and FF are always right on the money. Run away voltage caused my temp gauage to do the same and my dash lights got super bright. New voltage regulator solved that wierd issue.

First I want to thank everyone for their help. 65GGvert, dplotkin and FF, it was the voltage regulator. Just got the new one last night and installed it this morning. Voltage is good. Now my Battery gauge does not act like a Tach LoL!! and temp is normal.
Went for my first successful test drive this morning in 15 years!!
