What is this pedal for?
I recently purchased a 56 and have a question about a pedal above the high beam and to the left of the parking brake. Can someone tell me what it is for. I looked in the manual but cannot find anything.

I can’t see it very well in your picture, but it appears to be an original type pedal. It’s mounted in the correct position for a manual transmission car. The Powerglide cars had their pedals mounted further inboard.

It depends on the year. As I recall, 1956 was a pedal pump only. It may have been 1957 when the windshield washer system went to an electric pump.
Someone on here will know and correct me.

The NCRS judging guide for 1956 through 57 says both cars used a driver operated foot pump on the optional windshield washer system. Not that it matters, since we are talking about the 56. The only difference in the systems is that the 56 models used a reservoir bag, and the 1957 used a washer jar made of hard plastic by Trico.

Yep, that is the foot operated pump for the 56-7 windshield washer.
Furthermore, cars equipped with a washer had TWO cables going to the windshield wiper motor switch. One cable was from the dash **** and moved the switch on the wiper motor to the ON positions (hi and low). The other cable to the wiper switch came from the foot pump, And also turned on the wiper motor.
On TOP of the firewall, on the far left, near the hood latch, there is (or should be) a rubber grommet. If the car was equipped with a windshield washer, the cable from the foot pump came through this grommet.
The cable from the dash **** comes through a grommet between the brake master cylinder and the wiper motor.

Do you have a photo of how the two cables are attached to the switch?
Thanks!
