A bit confusing...the Judging Guide says the 63 box cover is "plain" meaning NO markings at all, not even a part number ?
I have seen a faint engraved part number on several cars and my car has that number PLUS the "CHECK LUBE" phrase on the cover...
According to the JG 64 boxes had the "CHECK LUBE" text....
Maybe Rich Yanulis or Critter1 can shed some light...
Ernie Wilcox shows a 35,000 mile 63 box in another thread with just the faint part number....to add to the melee...
My May 29th 63 cover has the "CHECK LUBE" and faint part number and IIRC got no deducts in regional judging...
The JG says 63 (in boldface) cover is plain and the 64 (also in boldface) cover has "CHECK LUBE" -- no cross-pollination in 63...
Another JG FUBAR ?

Here is my cover, exactly as installed February 14, 1963.
Thanks Rich. Looks like it still has quite a bit of the correct original black coating, just like it should be. I see a little of the yellow peeking through under the black in a few spots?

if that was a silver coin, you would be talking about its patina!
Unfortunately, I think most folks would rather believe that the steering gears in 63-67 were NOT painted black, even though many originals and the original blueprint prove that they WERE painted.
I'm going to install my NOS steering coupler next week and figured I'd pull the steering box and do some bench checks on it...
The car is 'wandering' a bit and I've done a 'dirty' tweak of the lash as much as I'm comfortable with...so its in-lb torque wrench time and a look to make sure its packed with lube...
NOS rags are quickly becoming unobtanium.

Nice part. Interesting that it appears to be painted black. I've had quite a number of new/NOS ones decades ago and they were natural. And no yellow blob.
