Default Alternator Recommendation? 100amp, BB car

Hey all;

So I picked up all new repro PS/Alt brackets as I am trying to put Power steering onto the Red Car (65 with a 71 454 LS-5 motor) and I bought the kit from Long Island Corvettes. All the brackets are on and I now realize my existing Alt does not have the correct mounting set up.

So, A, what is the right class of Alternator and 2, any recommendations? I have electric fans and a stereo so I want to keep with 100am.

Also, as you can see in the pic, my crank pulley needs to be replaced with a 2 groove one. I'd like to not get the heavy cast iron one... Any recommendations?

No Man, the Alternator I have works fine, but the mounting holes in it don't line up with the new brackets....... I need a new Alt with mounting holes in the right place....

Sorry if I was not clear....

The pulley you need is a GM 3921923. That one fits all BB SHP engines with the short water pump. That's the stamped steel version of the cast iron pulley. It was used on SHP BB Chevelles, Camaros, Novas & Impalas. It's a 2 groove, deep groove pulley. There are many of them on Ebay for a decent price.

Thanks Ron. How do I know if I have a short or long water pump? Can you tell in the pic?

It’s a short pump. No Corvettes ever used a long pump as it won’t fit

If in your picture, the groove in your water pump pulley lines up with the groove on your existing crank pulley, then you have a short pump. The crank pulley for an engine with the long pump has the grooves extended forward about 2 inches. Here is a picture of a crank pulley for an engine with a long pump.

Nowhere man is right. A long pump will fit, but a long crank pulley will not---it will hit the crossmember.

If you're adding PS, the alternator can't be any bigger case size than an original Delco externally regulated one. The alternator brackets don't pivot to accommodate a big case alternator like in your pic, and the factory size case barely clears the driver side valve cover. There are aftermarket hi amp units that have smaller cases than original. You can also retrofit a correct case Delco unit with 100 amp diodes and stator coil. You'll also need the correct alternator pulley for PS, like this one for 390/400 HP cars, there's a slightly larger diameter one for 425/435 HP cars.
