[C2] Water Pump belt issue, please advise...

I had an inner w/p belt on one of my 65s. I always thought it was a "dead man's" belt. Designed to keep the water pump pumping if the other belt came off ( or broke ). Mine seemed a little tighter then yours. However, you need an original 2 groove pulley.
Maybe it is only used if you have power steering. Anyway, save yourself a lot of aggravation and go with the original pulleys.
On a side note I also had to replace my alternator pulley with the correct one because of alignment problems.

Andy, this is the set-up you should be duplicating...
Paragon shows a 2-groove water pump pulley for your engine w/ 7 1/8" outside diameter...

Good luck... GUSTO

Andy I've got a 67 427 mine has air condition but here are some pictures of my pulleys. I had to pull my water pump so one pulley is off.
What I've had to do to get the crank-water pump belt on is get some longer bolts for the water pump pulley to get the belt started. I put the longer bolts through the pulley then it gives you enough slack in the belt to get it started on the water pump. After getting the pulley started on the water pump put your original bolts in the pulley. The first time I replaced this belt I tried EVERYTHING. I tried putting both pulleys on at the same time, WP pulley and Crank pulley, that didn't work. It took me all day to figure out how to do it.
Hope this helps.

I have my small block set up like the 396/427 configuration in the drawing.
The two pulley belt is little loose, but it looks better than an empty groove. i used the SHP factory deep groove pulleys.

Hi! I’m struggling with this on my ‘65 396.
I lost one of the original belts and the other had rolled upside down. I ordered replacement wide groove belts from one of the usual Corvette suppliers, but the water pump to crank pulley belt is very loose. I can install it by hand easily without loosening the water pump pulley.
I’m wondering if I have the correct pulleys. Can I tell the difference between regular and deep groove or identify the pulleys somehow without removing them?
The car has a name brand aftermarket aluminum water pump. Is it possible that the shaft centerline is not in the stock location?
The alternator belt seems to turn the water pump just fine, so I can still drive, but I would like it to have the second belt on there. I figure GM put it there for a reason!

C322, I went through several belts until I found one that I could install. I don't have the car here but I think it is a 34 1/4 to 341/2 length. I put it on by unbolting 3 of the the upper pulley bolts and pivoting the pulley around, until could get the belt on and the pulley on the shaft and bolted in. Works pretty good...
If needed I can get you the exact belt number in a couple of days

1Cerberus4u says his belt is 34-1/4, maybe that is my problem right there! I'm not sure if the Corvette place sent me the wrong belt or something is amiss on my car.
Do typical auto parts stores have the deep groove belts?
