I know I've come across the explanation for these numbers in the past but just can't recall.
Dropped the tank on my '65 today and on the forward, exterior wall in front of the gas tank there is 162 marked in crayon.
Job number, or?

Yes, that's the job number. It also indicates that the body was built in St. Louis, vs. an A.O. Smith built body.
The same job number will be on one end of a cylinder head on the engine and also on the frame. This ties the major components together at assembly. (there are some exceptions)
