American Auto Wire opinion
Anyone ever buy a harness made by American Auto Wire? I am looking at the other usual suspects, but came across them and would like some opinions. Thanks.

I frequently use them for the Factory Fit line of harnesses that are like OEM. Got one just last week for a '68 Chevelle. Connectors and wiring are good quality. Considering that you are in NC like myself, shipping and delivery are faster than going with the left coast supplier. Just about anything I order is in stock, not the case with a well known competitor that might take weeks to fill an order. You may also find that a schematic is included with your harness, something I've never gotten from other companies.
So yes, my experience has been good with American.

I put one in my 60 and bought one for my 59 that is under construction. I buy the custom one that has extra circuits for rad fans and stuff. A little extra work, but very nice when finished and the inst cluster now unplugs.

I used them for my 67....it is modified and they had a kit that uses all factory wire colors and connections but allows for some customization. Having never completely wired a car before, i would say it was a pleasure to use their stuff. Their instructions are great. Way more than just schematics...they had easy to read graphic instructions. I would recommend them to anyone.

I used the Builder 19 kit for my restomod. Good quality for a better price than other suppliers. That kit gave me a lot of options for accessories, and I think it was less work than modifying a stock type of replacement harness for what I was doing. I would use them again, and can recommend their products. Nice diagrams too as others have said.

I used one on a '68 Camaro and was very impressed. Instructions are very clear and break down the project into digestible steps. It actually helped my troubleshooting abilities on other projects since they use the same wire colors as GM did for most connections. One thing that is important no matter what project you select: DEFINITELY invest in proper Packard style wire crimpers. I went ahead and used the ones sold through American Autowire. You will need both the large and the small crimper to be able to complete all connections since some have 2 wires into one end which requires the larger too. A very good investment since I've used them on many other projects down the road.
An additional bonus: the extra length in wire provided in the kits allow you to do some creative routing if you are not going for a restoration look. On the '68 Camaro I did, almost all wires were routed under the fenders instead of sitting there on the inner wheelwells. MUCH cleaner in final appearance!
Good luck with whatever you choose!

I have completely wired or rewired over two dozen cars and trucks over the years. 30 years ago I swore by Painless Wiring. Hands down they were the best kits with the best instructions. Unfortunately, they haven’t kept up and first Ron Francis and then American Autowire left them in the dust. All three are still clear and easy to install, however, in my opinion American Autowire is now the leader for a range of reasons. You’ve made a great choice.
