Yesterday I saw a 66 that had been converted to a split window. The rear glass trim pieces were made from fiberglass and then chrome plated. Looked great! Total cost was around $2000. But why would you do that???
Maybe that person wants to start the next urban legend about Corvette manufacturing, along with the BB hood on SB cars due to supply.....You know the one, about how the supplier of the fiberglass roofs in '66 had the production problem, so the guys in the factory went over the local dealer's parts counter and bought a '63 roof assembly so they could finish that car..... it was late on a Friday, before a 3 day weekend, so nothing was documented...…
So the owner can say "why yes, it is a split window." When the uninformed ask.
Nearly every time I drive my 65 I have someone ask if it is a split window and sometimes even when I drive my 57. People are ignorant as to what one really is and are just regurgitating what they have heard others saying.
Phantom Works in VA. fabricated a SW roof panel for '63 conv. for a customer's car a few years back. The car was red. Was the one you saw red? Dennis
Its Fantomworks in Norfolk, Va (I've visited them) - that prototype top never got to be a real "thing"...it had lots of problems.
I was in Mike Coletta's shop when he called them and inquired about one. I don't think that red one ever really made it out of the shop...but it got a lot of hype... The price was going to be $7K but again, I think it was a non-starter, and still is...
I don't even think they got to the point of figuring out how you would put gas in the car with that rig on the back...

Why would someone do this? Because the owner probably a) wanted a split window coupe, and b) didn't want to pay $90,000+ for a real one. Makes perfect sense to me.

not counting the cost of the fiberglass bumpers, Pauls quotes $500 a corner to plate fiberglass.....how many pieces made up that rear trim?
Not all that hard to figure out why the owner did it . . . he already owned a car he knew and liked, and he also liked the looks of the split rear window. So he added that to his car. End of story.

I don’t think money is a problem with this guy, he has around 60 classic cars all in excellent condition. So sell a couple and go buy a 63 Coupe!
Why do some people get all worked up over what other people do to their cars? Better yet, call the guy and advise him how he should conduct his life, he obviously is doing it wrong. Only 60 cars in his collection? Slacker!

i guess because I like to see other people get all worked up over it, Geez!
Looks good to me. We've seen a lot worse. You can count me in the it's his car to do what he pleases with group. I have enough problems without fretting over what others do. I do understand posing the issue though. I'm sure probably %40 here will not like my car when I'm finished with it, I don't like the wheels, I don't like the color, you should have used a real chassis, you ruined an original fuelie, and so on. In fact I might make a poll when I am done.
Stupid people keep the economy going. As a business owner, don't ask why just take the money or someone else will. The customer is always right because it's his money until he turns it over to you.
