IMO its a restamp. The 9 in first set of numbers looks wrong.

I most certainly have an opinion. I will wait for someone else to look up what LC was. It doesn't look like one of those grind outs, or whatever they were called.

It does look like they didn't get rid of the entire LC before adding what they wanted.

At least you can probably be certain it isn't a 396 with epoxy casting numbers. Somewhere, an Impala is missing its motor.

Can someone weigh in on that weird 9, I've seen it elsewhere before. You'd think if they were going to the trouble they'd get the complete stamp set.

No opinions... just some observations. It appears there are FOUR (4) similar areas within the date stamp area:
The bottom of the
'2' , where the
'9' crosses the
'T ', the right side of the
'9 ', and the bottom of the
'L' .
My animation isn't lined up perfectly... but I see the similarities:
In addition, I've seen that style of the number '9' multiple times... here are just a few (from 1966):

questions I have
Look at the broach marks are the top of the pad near the head
They stop
Then a line clear across the pad and no broach marks
also the 958 is not inline with the rest of vin
legit ?
Factory grind out?

Thanks I've often wondered as well about the narrow and wide 0's and O's.

Factory grindouts are just that, a bit in a grinder and spot removing what was incorrect. Then stamped over. Very rough looking. They would never take the time to machine off carefully. We’ve been through this on the NCRS side YEARS ago.....

I'll just throw this into the mix.
Here's a pic of the stamp pad from my 69 427/400 automatic car. I sold this car a few years ago..
It is most assuredly an original stamp..

This is definitely an original stamp.
