Default Replacement gas pedal

The replacement pedal I installed years ago has aggravated me ever since because it will flop over away from the lever from the firewall. Is this typical? No sense buying another if it's going to do the same thing.

Sounds strange. I replaced the gas pedal a bunch of years ago and have had no problems, Unfortunately, I don't remember where I bought it. One of the major Corvette parts suppliers , I'm sure.

If it "flops" then its broken -- there isn't much to them so perhaps the rubber flap on the bottom has pulled off the head of the mount screw or the screw is stripped or the nut plate has come loose or the spacer is missing. All these parts are available at Zip..

Mine doesn't look like the one you have pictureed, it's basically a pedal on a hinge and I don't think it's broken. It probably didn't 'flop' when new as the hinge was tighter but there's nothing about the assembly that would keep it upright. And most likely I bought it from Ecklers since they're right up the road from me.

Hmmm....
They are all "pedals on a hinge" and just count on the toughness of the rubber to keep the up ad down motion aligned and the downrod on the nylon rectangle on the back of the pedal....I thought the pedals either screwed into a nut plate or pressed onto two ball studs in the floor...

Prob need to remove it and see what is going on...

Is it tight to the floor?..or is it cracked rubber?

He may be referring to the 63 to 67 Corvette service part sent out by GM in the 80s. I ordered 5 at the time and they all came with a visible hinge.

What I meant was there is no rubber 'flap that would keep the pedal upright or bias against the lever, just simply a peddle and a hinge plate. Now that I've seen the pics I'll know when going back to Ecklers if I'm getting the correct part.

On the same subject, how hard is it to remove the gas pedal swivel assy. Seems like its really buried up there on the floor/tunnel and the only way to really get to it is when the bell housing is removed or the rear of the engine is lowered as when your removing the tranny. Just wondering.

It's a PIA to get the pinch bolt loose to remove the lever then the two bolts that hold the bushing retainer but it can be done, I have done it. I worked from the drivers side and removed the spark plug wire bracket and probably wired the distributor cap out of the way and worked with short length wrenches.

Thanks 'tbarb'. Thought it may be possible but have never done it. Just looking up from the floor, it looked like a real PIA to get to. I'm use to working in tight places in the aviation field, so hopefully this won't be worse than that.

If you are 6' or over, refer to post #3 that has the diag. and remove the pedal and just place your foot on the pedal rod.
This gives about 2" more room.

I've often thought of doing that just to forego my issues with the pedal. I'd like to have some sort of small floating pedal rather than simply pressing against the lever.

If it has a visible hinge it's not the right pedal for a 65, which I can only assume from your screen name since you didn't mention it. I just replaced mine because I broke the rubber just like the one pictured above. I was pulling up on it and cracked the area above the base as shown. The correct pedal cannot "flop" without cracking.

I bought mine from CA around two years ago for my 65. Installed and works fine, only issue is the two screws are about an inch too long and I always manage to snag them when crawling around underneath.

I should follow up to say that I purchased a new one (again from Ecklers) and it's like those pictured above with the 'flap' so it no longer flops. But what I did not notice until later was that it angled a bit more to the right. That wasn't a problem until I fixed my carb problem with the secondaries not opening. Once that was corrected, the pedal now went down far enough to hang on the vinyl wear protector on the tranny tunnel part of the carpeting. And that I discovered that when I floored it in second on a short section of back road with a 90 degree corner at the end! There was a bit of a panic moment until I switched off the ignition and braked hard enough to make the corner. I was then able to bump the pedal and have it return to the top of travel and drove back home sedately. The angle of the pedal wasn't so much the problem as the fact that the carpeting was slightly bunched up in that area. I was able to use a heat gun and a fresh application of spray adhesive and get it mostly flat again so the pedal does not touch it.

It was probably just as well the the tires were still spinning and had not 'hooked up' by the time it took me to kill the ignition! I'm a bit amazed that I found the ignition switch that fast as I drive 4 different cars and it often takes a moment to reorient myself to where various controls such as A/C, wipers, headlights, etc are located in each of them.

Speaking of gas pedals, I am 6' and drive a 57.
I removed the pedal and gained 1" of leg space.

I had peoblem with the pedal slipped of. Very annoying. Bought a new one and found out that some earlier owner had sized one of the bolts, drilled a new hole in front of the original and used a bolt and nut. So the pedal was mounted in an angel towards the firewall. I got the sized bolt out, installed the new pedal - works great,
