Default Fuel line protector question

So after looking at several pictures, where is that spring looking protector on the fuel suspposed to be? I see some with just a few inches out of the hole and some going from the hole down to the frame flat outside the kickup. Also, where is that sleeve supposed to be. Here is a pic of my spring and some shots of the line in the frame.

Thanks guys. I was beginning to doubt mine after seeing several with just a couple inches of the coil sticking out at the kickup.

It was probably cold out and it was experiencing shrinkage.
