Well in case anyone is wondering, the reproduction gas tanks are still a pain to install. I finally pounded mine into place.
One thing I did when I installed the new nuts for the tanks is that I had them turned around backwards thus making it impossible to get the bolts started. Don’t do this! It causes even more aggravation than you will already have.
Just did mine last month......I pryed it out and pryed the new one in. Careful (I WASN'T CAREFUL) not to tear the strap bolt nuts riveted under the car when loosening the tank straps. replaced my vent hose and sender so not to go down under again!!!!
I had to bend down the tabs and hit the corners of a the tank with a rubber mallet. This was in 2008 when I did it. It was PITA to get the bolts started for the straps. I bought extra long bolts in various sizes then replaced the bolts as the straps were getting formed to the tank. Plus I taped the straps where it hooks in place so they would not come out. I know I lost about 10 pounds of sweat getting it the over sized tank installed. The tank cover screws will not really cause a problem.

When you close up the tank cavity use some of that closed cell home insulation gray foam with one sticky side on the lid instead of that gooey paste mess...nobody sees it and you'll thank yourself later on...
