I changed out the thermostat in my 63, she was running hot at idle. As well as a full flush. End result, with a high flow 180 thermostat. The car ran in the garage for 30 minutes pegged at 180. So I think mission accomplished. But I have a few questions:
I didn't drain the system first but the upper radiator hose was pretty dry. After all this and burping the hose, filling the overflow, etc. Hose still feels empty. Is this OK or should it be full?
While manifold and really old thermostat looked fine as did old antifreeze (no oil, etc.) the thermostat housing was rusted to hell on the inside. I scraped it down and nothing was lose but should I replace?
If the thermostat housing seals its prob OK, but it wouldn't hurt to replace it.....just two bolts and a hose..
Thermostats control when the coolant flows to the block once the car reaches operating temp and they are fully open they are no longer a factor in controlling the temperature....unless your old one was sticking, but I won't argue with success.
No leaks anywhere. Unless its a pinhole one that evaps before I can detect it. Thanks for the thought. I agree the rust has me thinking its often dry in that collar.
Thanks. Sealed fine, agree it wouldn't hurt to replace, just have to go thru the entire process again. Agree about the workings of the "stat". Also agree I wont argue with success lol. The one in there looked really really old. The car at idle would rapidly heat up and spew if I let it.
