Default Acrylic Lacquer paint source

Is anyone aware of a source for Acrylic Lacquer paint either R&M or Sherwin Williams brands? The guy doing the body work on my '62 has found Ditzler to soften with heat and the Dupont is taking waaay to many coats to cover. I am specifically looking for Honduras Maroon R&M #A1221R. I do not have a number for Sherwin Williams. Thanks in advance for any and all leads. Jim

Check the technical discussion board at http://www.ncrs.org . There was a thread a few days back about where to get lacquer. Possibly one of the sources carries your brands.

At the NCRS National convention there was a special Paint seminar and someone asked about this subject. It was pointed out that the current lacquer products have had major formula changes in order to meet EPA spects. and are not the same as those sold in earlier years. We were then shown panels done with both Lacquor and current base/clear products and you could not tell the difference. The difference was the painters knowledge of just how to use what products that are available. It is also why some people get big $$$ for paint jobs. You might also want to check out the Sikkens(sp) line of paint products.

jasiii,

My previous source for R&M products had closed up shop a couple of years ago (as had several other paint suppliers in the area - SW of Chicago).

Welcome to the forum and good luck in your search.

Thanks, Tyler! I may have to go with a base/clear coat but I prefer the acrylic lacquer, just in case I want the car judged. The guy doing my body work has suggested we mix the base and clear, but he is already way over my head on the technology.

jasiii,

We thank you!

You are correct. They are Torque Thrust "D"'s in 15X6. Had them on my 66 Vette back in late sixties, and had to recapture my spent youth when I got this Vette. Added a center knock off style spinner (just to make them different).

NCRS doesn't insist on lacquer, only that it appear to be lacquer. They've even held seminars to do just that. The "lacquer-thinner-on-a-rag test" is never required and is just something an owner can do if his paint just doesn't look right. My understanding is that if it looks close, they give you the benefit of the doubt.
