As one the many who replied yes, let me elaborate: I would buy an automatic C1 because I already own a 4 spd 61 & 57. If I needed to replace one of them, I would consider a powerglide if the car was pristine #1 car with a perfect no hit body, frame and flawless paint. At this time I would probably convert it to a T-10 4 speed. In another 15 years when my left knee continues to bother me, I might well leave the PG alone and enjoy those sublime two speeds!

Short answer, no. I don't overthink problems. I think before I make any decision. I make the decision. Then I evaluate the decision. Saved me a lot of time in the past 66 years; work, finance, family, friends, houses, cars, boats, ... with the exception, maybe, being on wife number four.

Am I allowed to say Carroll Shelby here? Didn't Shelby install an automatic in his personal Cobra 427 later in life? Now there's a $1M mistake... according to some.

It’s interesting how some here would give up a 4-speed for an automatic when their knee gave out. I went for a new knee when that happened. Treat your body like your car. Replace parts as they wear out or stop working properly. I’ve had several surgeries to keep me going (knee - 2 times, shoulder, cataracts, hernia, hiatal hernia, Nissin Fundoplication). Having prostate surgery today. I can’t imagine what my lifestyle would be like if I didn’t keep up with that stuff. Probably like a car that’s neglected and never repaired.

Fix stuff as as it goes bad (your car and your body). You’ll be happier in the long run.

I wouldn’t actively go looking for an automatic, but if one became available locally at the right price, I would absolutely consider it.

Carroll owned more than one automatic Cobra. The estate still owns the last 289, CSX2589, that is also an automatic.

Steve,
Does your theory apply to a wife?

I honestly get tired of shifting in traffic, especially in stop and go traffic. A good auto will beat a manual through the 1/4, HP being equal, anyway. A few very practiced drivers can over come the disadvantage of a manual in the 1/4. For any type of road course, a manual is preferred. Clutches are PITA to change, anyway, once you get past about 35 years old.. It doesn't both some hard core masochists, though.

Mostly.

I live in the suburbs, and any direction I go there are stoplights about every 1/4 mile. I like driving my vette to the store; I don't like hafting to shift 25 times while doing it.

I'm over 60 and had enough of shifting gears by the time I was 45. The automatic transmission was a wonderful invention.

Here's what I blame--Way too much traffic on the open roads of the fifties-sixties. Aging knees and hips, truly amazing automatic transmissions. One last thing, okay two more---we're all a little lazier and a cell phone occupying the shifting hand.

I guess the "shifters" still remain pure to drum brakes, crank windows and manual chokes.

You haven't been using the iPhone holder? Future proofing had amazing insight at Chevrolet in the 60's.

She probably had an equally rude reply if you would have said 4-Speed.
