1967 with 427 with A/C Powerglide Removal
I have to remove the powerglide transmission from the ‘67 that I am working on. This is a big block car with A/C. Some will say remove the engine with the transmission but I really don’t want to do that with all the work that would be involved to remove the air conditioning unit, radiator, condenser. Any tricks about getting it out? Have read the Shop Manual, but looking for someone who has been there and done that. Thanks

you can remove the trans with the engine in the car.

I am located in South Carolina. I am just looking for any tricks to getting it out. Why GM never put in removeable crossmembers is beyond me. I bet GM mechanics hated this job of removing transmission.

I did one in a 67 427/400 several years ago the trans has to be nearly stood on its end but it comes out. It must be strapped to the jack or it will slide off, torque converter also wants to slide out.

Put a C-clamp (or two) on the edge of the case opening to keep the torque converter from falling out.

Got it out! Made a brace using the measurements from the service manual. The one thing I did do was removed the flywheel which aided in it dropping out. I can see why the torque converter would fall off without the brace, it is just about on its ends when it drops out. Now the trick is getting it back in.

So what’s wrong with the power glide that you needed to remove. Details on your car? After restoring and driving one you realize I how uncommon they really are

Hi Gary , Wish you were closer . Would have had a deal for you , as I am putting a 4 speed overdrive in place of my powerglide ( less than 2000 miles on rebuild )
but good luck on your project. Still crazy after all these years ! Frank in Mass.
