Default Differences in wheels

Can someone please tell me what the differences are in 15 x 5.5 wheels that work with drum brakes and 15 x 5.5 wheels that work with disk brakes and not drums? I have found a couple of wheel sources that may work for my '64 spare, but reading a current thread on wheels I want to be sure not to buy the wrong wheel. To anticipate the question, at this moment I have no information on whether there are dates on the wheels or not. I believe '67 was a 15 x 6 wheel, but don't know what '65 and '66 were. Don't really care what date if any is on it as long as it will work with drum brakes. Thanks.

No expert on your wheels but 63 and 64 use 15 x 5.5 and there were no disc brakes available. Starting in 65 the size went to 15 x 6 and disc was standard. So not sure how you are finding disc brake wheels for 64.
Correction to my post, appears knockoff was 15x6.

65/66 wheels are 5 1/2 and fit easily over drum brakes. In fact, a number of early '65s were delivered with drums to use up leftover stock.

As stated above, wheels were backward compatible. The 65, 66, 67 work on 63, 64. 63, 64 do not work on 65, 66, 67 disc brake systems.

Thanks POP. That's exactly what I was looking for. I have a '64 with drums and wanted to know if wheels made in '65,'66 and '67 for disks would work on my '64. All good and thanks for the response.

Not to use leftover stock. They had to be especially ordered with disc brake delete. 316 buyers did so.

As said by others,, 65/66 wheels were 5 1/2 in and will work fine for your drums.

Thanks for the great information guys, but this thread is over two years old and my '64 with drum brakes is long gone. Never hurts to learn something though..

Nope. Thought I had found the one, but didn't work out. Still have my Elkhart Blue.

Please cross check this info. I think the inside of the rim will carry an ID mark of JK which would ID a rim shape suitable for disc application and backward compatible. I think only the letter J was used prior to 65 but I am no expert on wheels. This link about 2/3 of the way down for more info Technical Information: Wheels and Tires (4crawler.com)
