1963 Fuelie bad gas purchase
Good morning,
need some help. I think I bought bad gas. After buying late evening last week went to start this morning and running like crap. I think the high octane BP gas wasn't as advertised. Who knows but car was running fine prior to that gas purchase. Plugs, wires, and tune up were completed and all looks normal. My question is what can I do to fix this? SO empty out the fuel tank and fuel lines and add new gas? Any gas that is better in Ohio. I have been purchasing 93 octane. Does anyone recommend a good injector cleaner to add to the gas? Is there a gas additive that would do the trick? DO I need to drain the tank? This is turning into a PITA. Thanks for any responses.

If you didn't fill up then I'd add "good gas" and some Lucas Fuel/Injector cleaner and see what happened or maybe some Marvel Mystery Oil added to the gas...
But draining the tank isn't that big a deal...just break loose the rubber hose at the rear tank to hard line connector and have cans ready....
HOWEVER, lots of things can cause problems, very suddenly in some cases, so I'd check those too, clogged fuel filter, pin walking out of fuel pump, gas cap vent clogged, etc..

running like crap = missing on what seems like all cylinders at start up and acceleration, starts but not running smooth at all, cold or hot.

What Frankie said.
Not to over state the obvious but the filler neck is wide did you look in the tank? Do you see anything to lead you to believe the gas is "bad" ? Maybe sediment, water, does it smell different?
I've seen diesel fuel mixed in gasoline because the delivery man wasn't paying attention. I hope you get this resolved without major issues.

You have some good advice so far, and probably more will post. But nobody will be able to 100% guarantee a fix over the internet, you will have to get out there and start doing stuff.
Start with the easiest, and take one thing at a time. That way when you solve it you will KNOW what it was, and if there is a "next time" you'll be ready for dealing with it. Frankie mentioned plugged vent - check that and fire it up to see if it makes a difference. If not, pick your next item. Fuel filter?
And please let us know what you find. Always helps to learn the final diagnosis. Good luck with it!

If you filled up and then drove at least a few miles home and it ran okay, I'll guess it's not anything wrong with the gasoline. If it ran bad on the way home, probably the gasoline.
Check the choke and make sure it's opening. If you know how to trouble shoot the cranking signal valve, check that.
Sometimes, water gets in fuel and yes, even diesel has been known to be dropped in the wrong tank. Take a sample of gasoline by pulling the rubber hose off at the pump and collect it. Let it settle in a glass jar. If there's water, it'll show. If it's diesel, you can smell it.

thanks for all responses, I will post results. I am going to drain the tank, the fuel filter is 2 years old. I assume should be ok but I am going to drain that, clean it out with good gas. Can anyone recommend a better / best gas? Is there such a thing. Shell, Marathon? I don't have access to racing fuel nor would I want to run that fuel daily.

Try draining out the tank, as some have suggested, then fill up at least half w/the ethanol free gas.

That wouldn't have anything to do with octane.

You might have contaminated gasoline but you don't need rocket fuel, airplane gasoline, racing gasoline or anything special if you engine is built to stock specs. Mine runs fine on 89 E 10 and so does some others here.
