Default Removing the Battery

. . Ok, Here's what I would consider a stupid question. . Normally. .
. . 1962 C1, , Battery died, No big deal right? ? Until I tried to get it out. . This stupid thing won't come out through what looks like the only way, straight up and out. . Except it won't clear the exhaust manifold to swing it to center and up. . Can't rotate it, not enough room. .
. . What am I missing? ?

IIRC I used to tilt the battery front to back to lift it out. Almost 90*.

If you haven’t already, it helps to disconnect the fresh air hose and move it over to give you just a bit more room.

And use a battery lifting strap connected to just one terminal for a good grip.

Interstate Battery makes a battery for the C-1 Vettes (can't remember the number I think maybe a 24) that has 50 more CCA's than the standard battery but it's 1 inch shorter in height. You' would be amazed how much easier it is to maneuver the battery in and out with that one inch missing.

My battery is in the trunk for reason. Plus, the battery isn't exposed to engine heat. Yeah, it upsets the polar moment of inertia on the car little bit, but i am not doing Sebring in it.

But in answer to your question, rotate battery 90*, turn vertical 90*, reach under with right hand, lift stright up,and try not to lean on the fender while doing all this. It was much easier when i was 20.

. . Thank you all. . Finally got it. . Yes the air tube was out of the way but probably the hardest part was not leaning on the fender while all this was going on. . I did remove the hot air tube on the manifold to the choke. . This gave me just the little bit I needed to turn, tilt, twist, raise and roll the battery to come up without cutting a huge slot out of the fender. .

Some will also tell you to put a plastic grocery type bag under it, or around it, while you tip it up and out, to avoid any runs, drips, or errors. I've tried that approach, and find it very difficult to get a good grip. Instead, I just lay an abundance of towels under it, and on the fender, of course.

It never hurts to install those '58 steel supports under the fenders in later midyears (like I did) - really stiffens up the fenders and eliminates much of the worry of stressing the fiberglass if you have to lean on it or rest a part on it temporarily...most of the repro vendors carry them and its a 45 minute install...using the windsplit hardware.

Just finished a straight drive from Myrtle Beach, SC to Orlando in driving rain - I'm a bit loopy...
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
