Default Brake Light Strobe

I got quizzed about this 3 times today based on a thread I posted this morning... I used this module:

Amazon Amazon

You only need the ONE module to flash ALL FOUR BRAKE LIGHTS.

It installs under the dash near the brake pedal; it has a ground wire and the remaining two wires go in series with the brake light's switch's signal from the turn signal switch....
One of the two goes to the wire coming from the turn signal switch and the other goes to the brake light switch... The added module intercepts the brake light signal, transmutes it into a strobe of adjustable frequency and duration that is sent to the brake light switch to strobe ALL THE BRAKE LIGHTS ON BOTH SIDES.

Some creativity with spade connectors from most anywhere and you don't have to butcher your harness, Connect the wires per the instructions for the option to strobe both side brake lights and then zip tie it out of the way - a 15 minute no-brainer...

I'm not taking down my Vintage Air A/C ducts to photograph the wiring and its too simple to require that anyway.

Back up to a reflective surface and adjust the duration and number of flashes to your liking with the two adjustments on the module, and you're done.

This MAY NOT BE LEGAL in your state, I haven't checked in Florida but I'm running with it anyway... It really does make folks hang back a bit on braking or just as a friendly "brake check" for high-speed tailgaters...

Just be aware that the ground wire is WHITE (not black) when installing:
The BLACK wire would connect to the ORANGE wire on a 63 and the RED wire goes to the ORANGE wire's prior location on the brake light switch,

Thanks, Frankie. That module is a lot different than the one I was looking at:

http://NEW XP- 60X +60 Brake Flasher..._I1Y1CbTGEBYJB

It’s not programmable and I think it may require a unit on both sides. The only advantage is you can work back at the taillight area instead of under the dash.

Frankie: Nice job! I have seen that brake setup on the road here in FL. I have seen it on motorcycles and ambulances and a few street rods. I think it's legal here in Florida. Jerry

I installed one of those modules on a '72 MGB I had a few years ago. I didn't know until a friendly LEO told me they are only to be installed on a third brake light, and not the main lights.

You can leave it in and just tweak the adjustments for one long flash just like an unmodified brake light...
I'm gonna keep running with it...the few times I'm on the road and the pathetic lack of LEOs giving tickets here so I'll roll the dice...

As I said in the first post check the regs for your state..

From what I found online they are not legal in Ohio. Turn signals and hazards are the only allowed flashing lights. But I have seen a few cars with flashing brake lights.

Pretty interesting product----should come on all cars.

I noticed some of these are only for LEDs. If you're still running incandescents you might want to check.

This device works with both bulb types but purportedly the incandescent bulbs can't flash quite a fast as LEDs..

Many of the new cars have that flash built in on the third brake light. Flashes a couple of times and then all three brakes go on. Due to that, I can't believe it would be illegal in any state.

Florida's regs:

(7) Flashing lights are prohibited on vehicles except:

(a) As a means of indicating a right or left turn, to change lanes, or to indicate that the vehicle is lawfully stopped or disabled upon the highway;
(b) When a motorist intermittently flashes his or her vehicle’s headlamps at an oncoming vehicle notwithstanding the motorist’s intent for doing so; and
(c) For the lamps authorized under subsections (1), (2), (3), (4), and (9), s. 316.2065, or s. 316.235(5) which may flash.

(8) Subsections (1) and (7) do not apply to police, fire, or authorized emergency vehicles while in the performance of their necessary duties.
(9) Flashing red lights may be used by emergency response vehicles of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Department of Environmental Protection, and the Department of Health when responding to an emergency in the line of duty.
(10) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

========================

Again - make your own decision based on your local statues and how much risk you want to take on an infraction.

There is a motorcycle version that flashes for 8 or so flashes then solid just to grab attention then comply with regs. No idea if it works on auto, but it is 12v.

For years I have habitually tapped my brake pedal rapidly a few times as I slow down, in the hope that the flashing brake lights will grab the attention of the following driver better than brake lights that are only "on." If forced to slow down on a high-speed highway, I keep up the on/off action on the brakes until I'm confident that I'm not going to get plowed.

Live well,

SJW

I do those things, too. I also always keep my foot on the brake when I'm last in line at a stop light, even when I'm on level ground.

I wonder how it works with c1 lights that have the turn signals going thru the brake light circuit.

That's the beauty of it....the brake signal, regardless of turn signal, is captured at the under dash switch where the module intercepts it and creates the strobe. It should work...

I would guess that the turn signal will flash rapidly also for a short time before going to normal blink, or will the flasher interruption cause the strobe to be full strobe everytime the turn signal is on?

This strobe is on the brake line at the switch.

Remember (and 65GGvert can opine too I guess), the brake function is disconnected on the side where the turn signals are engaged, so voila, no strobe on that side...

I'll have get out my wiring diagram and refresh my memory of how the power to that turn signal works.. So, yes, that sounds reasonable.

As long as I have the steering wheel off anyway and am grubbing around under the dash, it woudl be good time to install something like that.
