Could someone help me decipher the date code of the 3247 Holley which is installed on my (Sept 65 build) 66 427/450 L-72. The part number verifies that it is correct for a 66 427 but the date code stamped on the air horn is not a correct 3 digit number as per the judging manual..I think what we have here is 5 I 95 Must be for a later 427...Thanks for the help.

IIRC, Holley used 3-digit date codes up to 72-73 time frame, then went to 4-digit date codes (year+Julian date). That would make that a 1975 July carb or thereabouts.

Rhino:
When Holly went to the four digit date code around 1972-73 the format they used was Julian Date + Year. The Julian Date was 3 digits and the year was a single digit. But it was in the order I just showed. You got it reversed in your reply to Tom.
Tom's date code makes no sense since the first three digits are "519". The stamper must of had a bad day when this was done. The "5" perhaps should of been a "3"...........but it is anyones guess.
I guess it is possible that Holly used both formats at some point...........but if you check the posts we have in the archives they all show only the one four digit format I mentioned.
Hey guys, I just talked with the folks at Holley and yes, they remember the old geezer who sometimes went off his rocker stamping air horns back in the 60s The second digit is an I. Not a 1. So here's the decode
5. 1965 I. Sept. 9. 9th day 5. 5pm
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. LOL.

Tom:
What you state above is not the way I have ever seen it reported before.......and I have been checking/looking/judging for almost 30 years.
Some of the other parts of the carb are also dated if you really want to nail down the date. The metering blocks are one example. The carb base is another, I believe. So look around if you are serious about the carb heritage.
Otherwise we will take your (and Holly's) word for it.
PS: But unless you talked to a really old guy at Holly, chances are your carb was stamped years before the Holly Rep was even born.
PSS: Back in 1966 when I worked summers at the Interlake Steel Plant Machine Shop in South Chicago, one of my jobs was stamping parts like this. So I know first-hand how it was done.......or not done. I didn't care what was stamped on the part as long as I made my time and a half premium pay for the work. In my haste to make a buck, I even rolled a few part numbers across my fingers.
Well, Larry actually all of that stuff I produced was a joke....guess it wasn't funny enough ...anyway, since I know the air horn is not "numbers matching" I'm not concerned about any of the other numbers on the carb. Had it restored by Vince @ Vintage Musclecar. He did mention at the time that he did not think it was OEM. But it looks like new and runs great..Thanks for the post
