Casting marks
I remember reading on this forum about casting marks but couldn't find it in a search.
Are casting marks i.e. "GM 27","GM 1" etc.., indicating a tooling master or particular foundry or ?

These are the pattern numbers. Sand molds are made by making a negative upper & lower sand impression & adding sand cores to make the iron casting. Foundries would sometimes have multiple patterns to make the same casting. Also sand is abrasive & patterns & core boxes would wear out. this is why they were numbered so they could tell from which pattern or core box a casting was made from.
