You should be able to drive with manual steering just fine without any upgrades...

This is a 90* right turn then a 90* (slow curving) left turn using two fingers on the steering wheel of my stock manual steering 63, at around 20 mph...NOS rag joint, rebuilt, correct steering box, new Tiger Paw tires, recently greased front end and alignment for radial tires:

A roller bearing idler arm would be nice if someone made it. With ball bearings it would seem to still need bushings just to maintain shaft wiggle.

The ones I'm aware of use needle bearings. Why would you want the idler arm to wiggle. Wiggle equals lost motion.
