Default Weird Odometer

Went for a drive in the '62 this morning. Nice day, top down. I noticed before starting out that the odometer would turn past 50,000 on the drive. I figure appropoximately where it would happen. I was doing about 40 mph when it started to roll to
50,000. There it was, exactly 50000.0 and there it stayed ! I kept driving and it didn't move even 1/10. It was near a town so there was a red light to stop, and after the town back to around 55 mph. Speedometer was bouncing a little - maybe 5 to 10 mph each way, but still the odometer was stuck on 50000.0

While I always enjoy seeing one of the old cars roll the odometer to a certain milestone, enough was enough. Last thing I want to do it take out instrument pod - a real pain. I continue driving and it stayed there locked for 10 miles. Then, all of a sudden it starts moving. Nothing seemed to be wrong. I drove it 55 more miles till I got home and all was fine. I guess it just wanted me to enjoy the mark for awhile. Car had 106,000 on it when I bought it 47 years ago, so didn't see the first time it rolled past 50,000 miles.

Crazy one in zillion chance that it stopped exactly on 50,000 miles? If both the speedometer needle and the odometer stop, then it most likely is a broken cable. If the speedometer needle stops but the odometer continues to register, then it most likely is the needle shaft separated from the cup assembly. If the odometer stops but the needle continues to register speed, then the problem could be one or more of the odometer drive gears. The two long odometer drive gears are available but the small nylon "spur" gear is not. And, as you are well aware, it is a tedious process getting the unit out and inspecting things. Should you decide to pursue the repair and I can be of any assistance, let me know. Bill

I agree - no great mystery here beyond worn parts....the gear train is stressed the most when all the pawls line up at all 99999s and all the number wheels must move at once...

Frankie, I just noticed you passed “50000” too! You must have a lot of miles on you? And, I think you have posted around 6 1/3 times around the earth.

Bill = It seemed to work fine for the balance of the 55 miles to home. All wheels lined up corrected and advanced as they should. If it does act up again, I'll contact you,

Frankie - You're right as all the wheels move too infrequently. The far left moves the least and it might just have been some crude that held it up for a few miles. Once it started working again all wheel lined up perfectly, I wonder if it will happen again at 60,000 miles. Of course that's about 10 years + down the road and who knows if I'm still around or driving it then.
