Default Which manifold??

Hello all, I'm having difficulty choosing which manifold to use on my 66 coupe running a 496 ci, moderate+ Howard's roller cam, lifters and rockers, 4 speed, headers and a 780 Holley. I'm not trying to make a racer out of it but want good performance and getup-and-go. I have the choice between an Edelbrook C396 or a GM 3933163 (I currently have them both available) I would use the Holley 3310 - 780 with the Edelbrook or the Holley 3418 -850 cfm for the GM. What is the thinking and why?? :o\

This is the setup today.

What heads do you have? The C396 is an oval port intake. Some have a flange for a Q-jet as well as a Holley and the earliest ones are notched in the divider to use a Holley 3BBL carb. The 163 intake is a rectangular port intake. Both will do well. I believe the C396 runners are larger to assist with the cubes you have. The 163 is actually a great intake overall and with your cubes I'd remove the divider. There's some great testing here on a 496 with rectangular port iron heads..

A lot more great info here. Go to Projects/Engine and Driveline/496 project:

http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/

A few years ago I tested an untouched C454 with a Dominator flange on 555" project. I back to back dyno'd it against a mega $$$ professionally welded and ported Vic Jr and found it within 15-19 HP at the 750 HP range. Figuring it was designed for an engine 100 cubes less and there was a huge port mismatch to the aluminum heads....and it was a dual plane vs a single plane...I was impressed. I figure a couple of hours with a grinder could have brought the two very close to each other. Plus it fit under the hood much better. Those old intakes aren't that bad.

The heads are GM aluminum 391 and the C396 has the notch for the 3 barrel (which I do have). The ports do match up pretty well

I'll do some follow up on those sites and see what I can learn Thanks for the info.

On my 66 with a 496 with a good size hyd roller Howards cam I used the 163 intake. On reason is I wanted the factory look and I knew it fit under the bubble hood. On my car it was more for the look of a GM intake than anything. What Howards cam did you use. I'm just curious.

Good looking motor! Currently it still has a custom Crane roller Cam with their hyd. roller lifters. When I change manifolds I'll be changing the cam to the Howard's 120665-12 roller with their hyd. rollers. I wish I knew more about the Crane cam as it has TOOOO much power and makes it hard to drive. Step on the gas in fourth and the tires smoke (stock size) Howard's recommend theirs for me. If anyone knows how to find out more details on the pictured Crane let me know. I tried contacting Crane by phone, e-mail, and letter but got nothing. The company has closed and opened so many times that don't seem to have any records left

I'm using Howards 123505-12 cam 247/255 .680/.680 and believe it or not it has very good street manners. These larger ci motors tolerate more duration quite well. I also use a Holley HP950 carb
