I just cut the square tube stock crap out of there at the dash and just bring a whole bar across, and then the tie in to the engine Compartment thru firewall is easy!

I saved the stock pieces cut out, even though I think this was a poor way of doing it.

I am starting to think you aren’t doing a race car?

Naturally I came through high, right thru the vent area.

My project is buried under a ton of stuff, I am working on my El Camino presently! And I have it currently out, the cage.

I am using plate welded to frame, welded to the bar structures.

Then for the connection bars, I was bringing in another plate! One plate has threaded inserts welded, and the other just holes. Plan that it all is removalable is my complicated puzzle, I actually was trying to solve too.

If if you look at our cars.
Right side you have the brake mc, the wire loom connectors, steering, pedals, etc and then the headers (got to come in over those)

I have big holes in my firewall, but honestly trying to think for I want or need to come thru the firewall? Just do the standard 6 point, with your own taste!

If you are not racing super high end stuff (I initially was planning on the Silver State Nevada Hilo run), then just protect the drivers compartment! The bars in the engine are really a pain in the azz!

Here is what we face.

I don’t have a heater either! And no trim tag! Keeping your stock stuff, would be hard. I don’t even have hood release stuff, as I am hood pins.

My initial thought was if I do plow a car racing, the bars send it over the top of the engine essentially I guess!

I have just contemplated just like hoops or triangle up off of the frame, not coming thru the firewall! Does it need to be braced thru the entire car!

My thoughts too were more for frame rigidity and less about driver protection up there!

Those vents, what good are they? They just get some air to the passengers compartment I guess, I have a convertible, so that is more for the Coupe thing I guess?

Where I was on the passengers side was coming under the alternator over the headers!

I cut cut it all out, to design.
Even doing something with the radiator wall to brace the frame horns.

I probably shouldnt have gave the impression, heck easy. It isn’t. Your problem way harder than mine, if you want to keep it Street, restorable, or whatever.

Dont worry!!!!!

No need to run to the garage, we are not installing a roll cage. For some reason, those pictues were super handing to show what all we have to think about to punch Engine bars thru the firewall! Nice pictures! 👍

Well I'm not running a heater ether so passenger side will be easier. Drivers side is going to be a pain. My 64 has the vents out right now I will scope that option. Someone must have bars running into the engine compartment

When I got my car. I hated the cage! The drivers side door bar is right there, and was badly routed! The hoop was right there to bang my helmet on, the under dash bar not up high enough, the ones coming thru the engine bay, in the way of working on things! I about 7 years ago cut it all out.

I alao wanted to go with less bars, by converting to stronger chromoly and then bolt in. If I hit anything, probably would be done in by the steering column anyways! I have a Borgeson joint on the rag.

If I run them in the engine, I might route them right to the fender glass and then down the side.

Autopower waa the SCCA approved cage, And they are still in business!

Most of the Vettes I have seen at vintage races haven’t had tubes running into the engine compartment. They weren’t competitive with Shelby’s or Cobras. If the car was GT1 or BP it had a 10 or 12point bar. If you want street/track you have to think about what will happen if you get in a wreck without a helmet on. The best racing cage wont be a good fit if you have a passenger. Here’s some more stuff I found in for sale ads. This one has a NASCAR type tube.

I have a whole bunch of different designs limitedly photographed to, I will have to post the best so have seen! My car was running GT-1 prior to my purchase, I had no camera back then. The only pictures I have of it early were in periodicals! Once I got a camera, I was trying to keep up photographing cool things, mostly cars, and as I was a young guy focused on just buying film, I have 600 rolls of film undeveloped, I need to get into that project.

I was getting out some magazines, so I checked my other car, and on my racer, the rollcage was punched thru under the hood release above the hood release that I don’t have. It is pretty much at the same height as the brake master cylinder hole, just a little big higher. The bar is just slightly higher than the Z-bar.
