My shifter is on a 4 speed Muncie and I’d like to take it apart, clean and lubricate it but I can’t figure out how to get to that top bolt. It’s recessed to make matters worse. Does it take a special wrench? Is it more accessible from the top? God forbid putting it back in!

If your car is a C-2, and your handle is bolted to the mechanism, your console will need to be removed. Dennis

It’s not the handle, it’s where the shifter is attached to the tranny. Looks like three bolts, bottom two no problem. Top looks impossible. Can I get away with resting the tranny on the cross member, maybe that will give me a little more clearance?

Norm, the top bolt should be accessible from below. You may not be able to remove it completely, but you should have enough clearance to drop the shifter down and them remove it.

The shifter gets removed from the mounting bracket before you can get the mounting bracket off the transmission, if you need to remove it.

Good luck... GUSTO

Looks like there are two bolts. Is the shifter going to come apart if I do that?

No, there is a bushing that goes through the shifter that holds the internals in place.

I usually get to the top bolt with a combination, open end wrench from the back side. It’s one of those 100 little turns processes to back the bolt out of the threads. The bolt stays in the shifter body and comes out as the shifter is removed from the front. The handle comes off first (at least for me) from the top after pulling the console plate.

That's where one of those little ratcheting wrenches comes in so handy.

I unbolt the trans mount at the rear and wedge the transmission over to allow a little more working room. You won't get much due to the exhaust pipe if you have stock pipes, but it is just enough. You might want to loosen the pipes at the maniflold too. Every little bit helps.

Well - I was about to say it was too tight on my car to use mine, but I first looked at my pictures from the last time I pulled my transmission and that is exactly what I used to remove the lower shifter bolt.

The upper, main shaft bolt is actually removed from the front - my memory was faulty. The lower one is the one I remove from the rear.

Awesome pictures Dan, thanks for posting them. I'll be archiving them for future reference.

I thought the plate with the three bolts that attaches to the tranny was all one piece with the shifter. If I understand this right, I shouldn’t have to remove this plate at all, just the two bolts on the shifter, right?

Thanks again everyone, I got the shifter out and back it again after changing out all the bushings and clips and oiling it throughly. It still tight and stiff but hopefully will shift better.
One question though, when reinstalling I noticed another tapped hole that I could have used. Looks like you could change the shifter setting. Anyone know what it’s for?

Is this a hole in the mount plate? If so, I think those mount plates are fabricated to use on a couple of different tail shafts, tail housing castings. If referring to a hole in the tail shaft housing it was probably for use with the stock Muncie shifter box. It's been many years since having a Muncie shifter but I believe it's normal for a Hurst to be a bit stiffer, but often more precise.

Yes, it’s in the mounting plate, but it’s tapped and doesn’t line up to any hole in the tail shaft. If you install the top shifter bolt, you can rotate the shifter to line up the bottom bolt with either of these two holes.

Seems that I remember a threaded hole like that on mine but I don't seem to have a picture of just the bracket to refresh my memory. It seems familiar only because I believe I thought at the time that it must just be there just to confuse people.
