Default clutch return spring assembly

Need Help, How do you stretch or expand the clutch return spring from the hairpin hook to the bracket on the cross shaft. I have the correct spring and the Oval Bracket that slips over the pin on the cross shaft bracket. This is a '61 and return spring is stiff and I cannot stretch it by hand.

Dennis on my C-2 I filled the spring with washers between the coils to help me strech it out since there was no room to get a hand hold if that helps.

You're talking about that big fat spring on the frame...not the little C2...midyear spring, right? If so, I do believe that there is a special tool to do this. I've helped a few guys do this...58...and a 62. Seems like we had a special device. ??? Chuck

I just installed a new spring on my 66. It was very stiff. So, I tried washers in between the coils...no good. I ended up using a large vice-grip pliers to grasp the spring and just muscled into position. Worked ok.

On a mid year, when all else fails, you can disconnect the clutch rod(s) and twist the bell crank back far enough so that you can install the spring without having to stretch it. You can then use leverage on the bell crank to get it back in position for reconnection. I assume you can do the same here?
