The car ran fine and then periodically it started hesitating on acceleration, then it would run fine. Now it is hesitating more and more but then it will run fine. I did replace the fuel filter. I thought if it was the pump it would hesitate all the time.
going to need to know more. engine, brand of carb, and modifications. I would first check your timing, if you have points check dwell. if they both check out then start trouble shooting fuel

I have that same problem with my gas grass trimmer...........Dam Carburetor!!!....Think I'll go purchase an electric grass trimmer tomorrow.
So if I follow you'r post correctly you have
196? Corvette?
327/350 HP L79? stock engine - so Holley carb?
That occasionally hesitates on acceleration sometimes?
Question - Does it hesitate when cold or only when hot?
- If only when hot then a lean condition or timing issue
- vacuum leak, accelerator pump, Vac Can, other issue.
Can you post a picture of your engine with the air cleaner off?
If you have a vacuum gauge you can quickly measure fuel pressure and then volume using a glass jar (I have the instructions if you need them); then park the car in a dark garage and with the engine running (AND PROPER VENTILATION) look for arcing along the plug wires (shielding off) while revving the engine a bit. Next I would suspect ignition coil, bulkhead connector, or, points condensor if you have one.
Finally sticking centrifugal advance weights can cause what you describe - those are worth a look too.
What is the proper position and can I do that without the new fuel pump installed?
Quote from one of our Forum Experts!!!
"It helps to have the motor on TDC but not necessary; if the engine block rod is pushed all the way up as far as it will go and your temporary bolt holds it - that's all you need. Bolt up the fuel pump, remove the temporary bolt and put the shorter original one back in and you're done....
