Default Flasher issues

Hi all - brand new member so apologies if I’m missing any thread protocols. I’ve read previous stuff on indicator flasher problems. I have 64 Corvette . Flashers worked fine then just stopped . Read what it might be - whipped off steering wheel etc and checked unit . It seemed fine but cleaned and refitted . Now when I hit the brake pedal both indicator lights come on! If I move indicator for left turn the lights go out but stay on if I move it to right turn! And of course - indicators still not working.

I'm sure I put it all back together ok but clearly my efforts have done something but not resolved issue. Aargh!

Sadly I’m guessing there’s no owner within 200 miles of me plus no local expert either . Very frustrating

Chris

Sounds like you have a grounding problem.

I'd be glad to try to help you. I need you to restate your question and symptoms. Don't use the word "indicator" for anything except the two little lights on the dash that flash when the turn signals do. Call the bulbs on the four corners of the car "turn signal lamps". Call the part you move to activate turn signals "turn signal switch." A little metal can above your right knee on the center console is the flasher that makes the turn signals actually flash. Using "indicater" for all the terms confuses what's working and what isn't.
Your original problem may have been the turn signal flasher itself was out but sounds like you've changed something else now in the switch.

Ok

All was working ok then the indicators stopped working. The dash indicator lights, and turn signal lamps all stopped . So stripped away wheel etc and checked out the indicator unit . It seemed to match the pictures and no evidence of misfit or lack of contact . Now when I press the brake pedal both indicator dash lights come on but do not flash. Turn signal lamps do not come on. When I hold down brake pedal and move turn signal switch for left turn the indicator lights go out. When I move signal switch back to neutral and to right turn the lights come back on.

Turn signal lamps do not come on whatever position the turn signal switch is moved to.

Is that with the ignition switch on?

Good question!

had mental block so just checked and bizarrely the indicator lights on dash only light when brake pressed when turn signal switch moved to right turn . Prior to this they came in when switch in neutral. The situation is the same with ignition on or off . Getting more confusing !

I need to think about this, but in the meantime check to make sure that harmonica plug that connects the turn signal switch to the car wiring on top of the car steering column under the dash isn't partially disconnected. Make sure it's firmly seated, you may have dislodged it a little when working on the turn signal switch.

Thanks

you may be right - it is tricky to slot in securely. Given the problem has changed since I had a look at the unit I may have left it not quite right . Appreciate your help 😀
