Default Windshield Washer?

Need a little help.

I have a windshield washer bellows rebuilt kit that came with no instructions and I have 2 questions:

1. How do I get the old bellows out? Seems like it’s attached to something behind it that I can’t see. Should I just grab the lip of the bellows with pliers and force it out?

2. What is the small piece of thin cardboard for? I thought it was just a piece of trash that got into the envelope but the online ad showed it.

Note: I’m doing this little project with the washer pump and wiper still attached to he car.

Thanks for the help.

Steve

Stick your thumb in the bellows, push, and give it a quarter turn.

The cardboard is some sort of dust shield. for the connector.....?

Getting the old bellows out is easy. Installing the replacement is a royal, gigantic PITA! You have to hold the sliding bar, see Buns' third pic, the flat metal plate extending from under the toothed nylon wheel so that the "tongue", see Buns' first pic in the middle of the bellows bore, so that it extends as far as it will go in the direction out of the bellows bore. When you try to put the new bellows on, you have to compress the bellows spring, get the slot in the back side of the center of the bellows in Buns' second pic to cover the tongue and then twist 1/4 turn all while the spring is compressed.

Steve - it sounds kinda like putting the brake shoe retaining springs and cup over the loose "nails" on drum brakes...everything has to line up, all of it pushed to the right depth and then twisted to secure things without messing up any of the alignment.....not fun...and, in this case, you can't see past the opaque bellows to see how you're doing...

Thanks to all. I took another look at the bellows. It appears to be in good shape, soft and pliable with no cracks or tears so I’m going to leave it in place and just replace the valves which are not in good shape

BUNS - I Just have to say that you always come up with great visual aids when you respond to a question. You’re definitely a “picture is worth a thousand words” guy.

Just finished this myself on a 65 Coupe. And is was an interesting installation. Once finished however, washer works continuously while the wiper in on.....Which explains why the previous owner abandoned the project and removed the bellows, spring and spring cap????

Very glad you got yours working....Mine washes very well....very well!!!!! Never stops washing!!!

You must have the cleanest windshield on the planet.

Have you thought about filling the washer reservoir with beer? Would make a nice feature for your garage.
