The tail lights/turn signals have been acting 'funny' on my '62.. I saw a great video on You Tube that showed how to fix my problem (in the steering column involving the turn signal assembly), so, after procrastinating for over a decade, I decided now was the time to attempt a repair. Before even getting to the actual problem, I'm having trouble pulling my steering wheel. I have a cheap "Made in Taiwan" puller, so that could be part of it, but it looks/feels like the threads in the two holes where you screw in the puller to anchor it are in less-than-ideal condition. I'd like to tap those two holes to be sure I'm getting a good 'bite' before I mess up the threads in the steering wheel even more, but I don't know what size they are. Can anyone help me the size of these threads? And are they coarse or fine? I know I need to 'balance' the puller evenly to keep the middle thingy that gets tightened straight & flat on the middle of the steering column as I press it off. I sprayed some W-D on the steering wheel spline, hoping that would help it slide off, but no luck. I put this wheel on about 5 years ago. I guess I should have used some anti-seize...and sprung for a good puller....
Besides the thread size, I also welcome any 'tricks' to do this. I've only changed a couple of steering wheels.
It's always something....
Thanks!
Threads are 5/16-18 (coarse). Just be patient and turn the large screw on the puller a little at a time. Maybe try tapping the end of the screw a few times in between turns. Good luck. My turn signals on my '61 were always giving me trouble too. Found out that the slot that holds the leaf spring was well worn causing not enough tension on the cam. I just shimmed the leaf spring into the proper position and it fixed it for good.
Make sure you're using the right screws, not metric or fine. My cheap Harbor Freight puller came with multiple choices. You can also "borrow" one from Advance Auto, or O'Reilly's or such if you need a more solid one. You just leave a deposit and then return it when you're done to get your deposit back.
I always paint the correct set of puller screws with some car body color touch up paint so I'll know the right ones each time.
Same with a 4-way lug wrench; I paint the right lug end with touch up paint - now if you have two cars with the same color and different size requirements; it doesn't work...
