Default numbers question

I am going to look a several 283 blocks that a guy has for my 59. They are all 519's and I can tell from the date code when the block was cast. How do I know what the info on the pad is. I have a couple of numbers books that tell me the casting number info, but neither one tells me what the pad information means. Where do I find a guide or something that I can use when looking at these blocks. Thanks, Ray

You're looking for a pad stamp that is in this format:

F(m)mddtt

F = Flint Michigan engine assembly plant

mmdd = month and day the engine was assembled (should closely follow the casting date)

tt = configuration code; valid codes for 59 Corvette are:

CQ = 230hp manual trans
DG = 230hp powerglide
CT = 245hp manual
DJ = 245hp 2x4 carbs w/powerglide
CR = 250hp FI manual
DH = 250hp FI w/powerglide
CU = 270hp 2x4 manual
CS = 290hp FI manual

vehicle serial was not stamped on the pad.

BTW, early 59's used 3737739 blocks.
