2020 C1 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
Default Shim Engine

1960 Installed new engine mounts. The fan comes precariously close to the bottom shroud. I have about 1/8" clearance.
It was suggested I install some washers between the cross brace and the rubber engine mounts to raise the engine up about 1/4"
Has anyone had any experience doing this or since the fan does not actually hit the bottom shroud, should I just ignore the tight gap?
Thanks,
Bud

Yup, I did exactly that except I seem to remember doing mine 3/16'. The reason I did it was to center the fan in the shroud so I could install a slightly larger diameter fan which cured my running hot issue in traffic.

I don't imagine the washers will hurt anything, and as a bonus they may actually improve the driveline angle a bit. The effect should be similar to adding spacers between the cross member and frame.

Edit to add: mind hood clearance

I temporarily shimmed the motor mounts on my '60 decades ago for that same reason. Later on I bought new rubber cushions to effect a permanent repair. The shims have worked so well, I have yet to install the new cushions.

Shimming the transmission crossmember down to improve driveshaft angle should improve your fan clearance problem. I would check to see what spacers, if any, are being used on the crossmember.

I think, as far as shims go, you would have less than a 10 to 1 effect, on fan clearance, removing transmission shims as compared to adding engine mount shims.

I don't know about the C1's but the C3's you can adjust the fan shroud somewhat where it bolts to the core support and where the core support mounts the sides of the inner fenders.

I agree. I used a 3/4 bar stock to shim my transmission cross member, it helped my driveshaft angle. I bet it would help center your fan in the shroud.
I’m running a Muncie transmission.
