I crawled under my '67 coupe and read the code stamped on the bottom of the differential carrier:
AW N 02 9 M
Can anyone decipher this code?
As best I know, the ratio is 3:08. But my car is an original base engine small block car with Powerglide.
I suspect a previous owner replaced the differential as it has the big-block type yokes with caps and bolts.
If my diff was changed to the big block type, what would be the advantage of doing that? Is it stronger? In what way? Does this mean I can do burn-outs without worry about blowing up the rear end?
It is a 1969, 3.08:1 posi, heavy duty (427) application. The housing cast number 3899143 will confirm this info.
So, how was the BB differential different (HD) than the SB other than the U-joint straps? Same ring and pinion? Same posi-traction carrier? Housing maybe?

Just curious.
Different stub axles with bolts/straps for the U-joints. Otherwise identical.

Thanks John, I was thinking maybe they went to the 12 bolt ring gear (8-7/8") and pinion. I never could understand why they didn't put the same gears as the 12 bolt when it came out, but then again, probably bean count.
Is the corvette 8.2" ring and pinion interchangeable with the 8.2" 10 bolt from a GM passenger car?
Couldn't resist learning more while I have you on the hook.

No, the Corvette ring & pinion gears are NOT interchangeable with the passenger car 8.2" 10-bolt; I reviewed the rear axle portion of Zora's SAE presentation again, and he made no mention of why the Corvette ring & pinion was unique to the Corvette. Maybe Gary Ramadei has more info on this.
