I posted a few months ago about frying some wiring and as I am taking things apart getting ready to change out the dash harness thunking that’s what needs to be replaced which I am fine with but I now see it is actually the engine harness...any way I just want to make sure I know why the harness fried and that’s where I need your help as I am not electrical expert (obviously). Ok here is what I think happed as I looked over the car after said short. The brown wire for the connector to the washer pump came out of the plastic connector and grounded on the case ( I think this because after all the smoke cleared that wire was not in its home. Looking at the wiring I have 2 obvious wires cooked which look like the wiper ground and the blower ground. The ignition was in the on position when this occurred. My question would the brown wire from the washer pump grounding on the case cause these two wires to fry or did I miss something. I was messing with the distributor which must have caused the wire to the washer to initially come out. Sorry for the long post but I want to get this right the first time.
Had to be a hot wire that shorted, ground wires are supposed to touch ground.
Just a random thought, a couple of weeks after I was "messing" with my dist. on my 67 BB I had a " similar" occurrence. For what it's worth, when I put the ignition shield back on, the 12 volt hot lead to the MSD box got caught under the edge, took about 2 weeks to wear thru, no damage, just shorted an shut down.
Yes it was the hot wire to the washer pump (ignition on hot—ignition was accidentally left on) but I want to make sure that the wires that fried were a result of this and not something else I messed up or missed. Just want to be sure of the initial cause. Thanks. Jim
