Default Electric Window Issue

Hi guys, happy Easter. I have an electrical short somewhere between the console switch and the door. I’d rather not take it to the shop with the window down and am wondering if there is any way to manually raise the glass temporarily while I trace the wiring.

Thanks in advance.

Henry

Power windows don't have a fuse. They use a circuit breaker. what makes you think you have a short? Many people use short when they really mean an open circuit. Describe as much as you can about the symptom.
Also share the year of your car.

This is a great answer. Of course, taking out the switch means dismantling the entire interior of the car (not really, but a heck of a job anyway...), but it will probably work.

I have a pitted after-market switch that is a year old. Obviously a piece of garbage, but can't figure out what vendor was used so I can return it. Probably only one company makes these, but I am going to bite the bullet and pay 200.00 for an NOS one that probably has better chrome...then I get to dismantle the interior of my car (again) and REALLY looking forward to THAT little chore...

Best of luck with your window!

Cheers,

Richard

What year? If we are talking 63 - 67 its in the console-they get dirty n stop working.

My car is a 64 coupe. Just before going on a drive last week, I thought I saw a wisp of smoke in the interior. The drivers side window was already down. A few minutes into the trip, I attempted to put the passenger side window down, but neither switch would work at that point. So I, “took apart the whole interior of the car,” and discovered that the switch and wiring harness were burnt. I ordered a new harness from Ecklers and cleaned up the contacts inside the switch case. Upon re-wiring the thing back together, I got a small spark when I tried to get the window to operate again. I traced the wire out of the (now removed) console, under the carpet and up into the dashboard. I cannot easily reach the portion of the wiring at that point, but believe there is evidence of some past rodent activity in that area. So my thoughts went to a few of the wires being gnawed through and causing a short. The likely solution at this point will be to purchase a new switch to compliment the new harness and hope for the best. I took several photos of the original switch/harness so I could see where to re-wire the new one, as none of the wire colors match one another. That could also be the problem. I really appreciate all of the feedback. I’ll let you know what happens.

Probably should have just ordered a new one, but it actually looked pretty good once I went over it with some sandpaper and a file.

All that would have been good information to have.

Well, you have to remove the console, and for my car it is right against the arm rest, so first that comes out and then the console, where the screws are so near the seats and then the shifter ball comes out so you can raise the console enough to unplug and unscrew the switch, which is nestled tightly down in the cup...it isn't an easy thing to do--kind of a pain in the butt. Also, you probably have to take off the side pieces on the waterfall to keep from scratching them when you remove the console. I have power antenna to deal with there, and that back screw on the passenger side trim plate is a real ball to remove when you have A/C...all in all, not a fun job, but necessary. Probably take out the seats just to have enough room to get to everything without scratching or messing up stuff. Yuk...

Cheers,

Richard

Hiya guys,

Just an update on my power window issue. So it turns out that not only did my switch burn out (as is apparently typical with after market equipment I'm told), but the short also fried both of my motors located in the doors as well. I had my electrical guy trace down the entire wire run, including looms, harnesses and power supply tie-ins, and he found no problems. He also stated that in all his years (as well as his boss's), he has never encountered something like this. The problem has been rectified, but I thought I'd pass the info along so you'd know what can ultimately be happening should anyone experience similar difficulties.

Cheers, Henry
