Default C1 windshield frame

A number of years ago I re-chromed my windshield posts and replaced the rubber seal on my 58

I was never happy with the end result, I could literally move the "original" glass up and down with my hands in the frame assembly.

I never used any sealers of any kind when reassembling just the foam filler strip in the upper channel.

So yesterday I had the pleasure of removing the windshield assembly to correct this issue.

Any advice from the experts? Should I used some kind of sealer?

First thing I would check is the bottom windshield pillar tabs for breakage if they are original...

What does the ST-12 say?

If more people read and followed the directions in the ST-12 to a T, their windshield frames would fit together better and their cars would not leak water in the rain. The same people who can't follow the ST-12 directions say the cars always leaked at the windshield frame, even when new... "Strip caulk? Whats that? Oh, I probably don't need it anyway".

If you need a new WS rubber gasket, get it from Corvette rubber, or some one that sells CR products, don't buy anything else. When i changed the windshield in 1988, I put in a new gasket, made by "somebody", it was dried and cracking in a year.

I put in a new CR gasket in 2009, and it has zero cracks in the rubber to this day.

I am not an expert, but I have been studying a few here on the forum. If you can move the windshield up and down, it is more than a sealer issue. The ST-12 states to apply a “medium bodied non-hardening sealer” to rubber channel. I used 3M Auto Bedding and Glazing Compound 08509 and Rich Mozzetta suggests a NAPA 4121 sealer in his instructions (photo excerpt below).

It took me several attempts to get mine right, and one of the problems I had was not getting the windshield completely in the lower channel (ST-12 excerpt below). When I placed the assembly on the car, the bottom of the windshield was out of the rubber seal (photo below).

On another attempt, I did not hit the upper post attaching nut plates with the screws and that let the windshield “float”, so that is an area I would ask you to focus on. Good luck!

I found this on Summit and Amazon. It appears to be very similar to the NAPA 4121 that is no longer available. Scott Drake CRL Windshield and Body Sealant for 1964-1968 MUSTANG - CRL-7708
Just ignore that Summit says it is for a Mustang.
