Yep! Take your time.........No big deal! Clean everything off and repaint while its apart............You might have to repair a few screw holes...maybe not...........Have Fun!
FYI! The console screws furthest up under the Dash can be a pain to reinstall......But you got this!!!
As you've already heard, the console does have to come out. In my case, while replacing the corroded PW switch on my 65 396
Roadster, I discovered the PW harness connector to be in bad shape as seen in the first pic alongside the PW harness 'repair piece' so good time to check all you uncover.

Replaced mine last Summer.
Take your time, and be patient.
While the console is out, take the opportunity to check/replace the following:
-ash tray door
-brushed aluminum plate surrounding shifter
-power window switch, if applicable
Note: If you do replace the the ash tray door, make certain you get the thumb latch that is attached with SCREWS as opposed to rivets. Much easier application.
