If you have a Petronix type electronic ignition the small metal piece are two of the magnets used for electrical pickup. This exact small thing happened to me. Pull the rotor cap and ignition pickup ring. You should be able to see the missing magnets. For a test, hook up a timing light and go through all wires, you should see two that don’t activate the timing light
