1964 327-300 Top end rebuilt by me about 500 miles ago during frame off resto.
While out driving Sunday I started to hear a loud ticking sound and pulled over to check. At first I thought something was hitting a wheel or something. When I stopped the car the ticking continued (Side note : Oil pressure was at 40 lbs when driving) and sounded like a collapsed lifter. Shut it down and waited a couple minutes while I decided whether I would drive it home or tow it. When I started it again, the engine was quiet. (Note: I wasn't over reving the motor, just a Sunday cruise). My question is, can the lifter collapse and refill like that? if so, what could have caused it? As always, thanks for the comments.
I am not one to use magic potions, but if the problem is a sticky lifter, a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase could free up a lifter. My old Acura Legend had that problem and I used MMO and it worked. I had to do it twice a year. Three to four hundred easy miles should do it. Change out with fresh oil. Please don't throw rocks. No rocks. I agree with you, Jerry. I use it in the crankcase and in the gas tank.
I'll vote for some debris. Had a 73 Olds that showed similar noise late one night and far from any service location. I had a long 5 mile downgrade in front of me so I coasted down the hill with my foot off the gas. By the time I got to the bottom the noise had stopped. Never had another problem with it, so I assumed it was a piece of crud in the lifter that broke up and disappeared into the oil.
