Default sidepipes

my friend has a all original 63 split window coupe. he is thinking of putting on side pipes. but he is wondering if it would ruin the value of his car? he is not planning on selling but
does not want to ruin the value of the car. i suppose if he added side pipes and decided to sell the car the new owner could change the side pipes back to original???

what are your thoughts on this??? thanks

To the purest the value lost is the cost to return it to the way it should be. IMHO it’s a bad idea.

Also not clear what you mean by sidepipes, factory style or Hooker Header type of sidepipes?

I have an original 63 coupe and many years ago I thought of adding side pipes. I didnt but did some research. I could do away with the mufflers and put chambered pipes in-place of the mufflers. I still havent.
That can be a choice for ur friend.

I love pipes and have pipes. But the 63 is the one year that’s so iconic I think they look foolish. I wouldn’t if it was mine.

I have side pipes on my '67 BB, it rolled off the assembly line with them. I like them.
IMHO, a SWC should be kept as original as possible, and side pipes were not an option.
As far as value; Post # 2 says it all.

I'd never do it, but if your friend is hell-bent on it, strongly urge him to not cut off the rocker molding tabs, or the lower fender tabs, such that the car can be returned to under-car exhaust with the least possible expense and hassle. Also retain the OEM rear valance, for the same reason.

Also would suggest he get some seat time in a coupe with side pipes before committing to the idea. The noise can be exhausting (pun intended). My '63 is a ragtop, and has had original style side pipes added. I really wish it still had under-car exhaust. With a 3.70 R&P, it's too much for my taste at 70 MPH, even with ear plugs. Sound will vary somewhat with engine, cam profile, gearing, etc, but the exit is right below your ear.

Live well,

Keep in mind all side pipe cars have keyhole slots cut into the bottom side of the frame to secure the rear most end of the pipes. I believe the '63 chassis do not have keyhole slots and would need to be added for proper installation. Reference AIM Section N14 Sht 2 bolt #5. Further reference same sheet View 'C' and note the notches cut into the steel rocker panel to accommodate the side cover mounting U-bolts. Does your friend really want to make these modifications?
I've attached a picture of the rocker panel notches, can't find one of the keyhole slots on the bottom of the frame.

As you know, the birdcage notches are not necessary to attach N14 hardware. And a stud can be welded to frame for rear attachpoint of side pipe, rather than carriage bolt in keyway slot. No point in going to great trouble to make a 63 appear to have factory N14. Everyone knows it was not an available option then. Just do the cheap and easy adaption, and go.
Or, even better, skip the whole idea.

Nice rust free frame. What is the welded nut on the outside for? I don't remember our '65 having that.

Couldn't guess. I saved the photo some time ago, because it was a good shot of the keyhole. I have no recollection of whose frame it was, but I probably found it on this forum. Somebody might recognize it and respond.

I was wondering the same thing about the welded bung. Interesting what happens to these old cars over the years. I found a strange bracket brazed to the differential cross member on mine I never could figure out the purpose of.
