Default Another Side Pipe?

it's time to replace the side exhaust pipes on my 67 coupe and i'm trying to figure out what i've got. in searching through the the various side pipe threads there seem to be at least two sizes, 2" and 2 1/2". the down pipe on the one i just pulled starts at 2" at the manifold and then transitions to 2 1/2" after the first 90° bend. is this typical?

66 and 67 small block cars all had 2 inch exhaust manifold. So the pipes would start out 2 inch and then transition to 2 1/2 inch.

so does this mean that the chambered part of the side exhaust pipe was the same size on both the 2" and 2 1/2" manifold cars?

Yes, the chambered sections are 1 7/8" which is why undercar exhaust systems are less restrictive.

mark, that's what i meant although i'm not sure what i've got on the car. i have a picture of them on the car in the early 80's but of course they could have been added earlier. there is what looks like an oem part number on the insulation on the inside of the covers but i can't find anything to identify the pipes themselves.
i should have mentioned, the car did not come with side exhaust from the factory.

They don't appear to be aluminized so there is a good chance they are GM side pipes if they date back that far.

Original GM pipes have a part number on the pipe as well as a "W" for Walker. This info is located where the pipes forst bend after coming off the exhaust manifold. OP may need some sandpaper or a wire buffing wheel to see them.

But I agree, if they are 1980 vintage, they are GM.

Larry

EDIT: Foe what its worth, I prefer Sweet Thunder OEM type pipes..........if originals cannot be sourced. But I think they may only sell in carbon steel without any aluminum coating. https://highfloperformance.com/produ...-sound-extras/

larry, those pipes look nice and also reasonably priced, i'll have to give 'em a call.
i'd like to try and find something that at least is not any louder than what i've got now. it'd also be nice to go with something less restrictive but from what i've read here for every 1/4" increase in diameter they get a lot louder. i'm already at the limit of what i can handle for more than a 30 miles or so.
