Default 62 electrical problem

After removing instrument cluster for new paint I thought I replaced all wires correctly but after reconnecting battery I had some smoke appear around the 4 wires at the fuel- temp gauges. Blue . Pink. Brown. And Pink. Is it possible that I switched the 2 pink wires? I grounded the black wire from the same group of wires to the housing just above. Any suggestions?

The wires are color coded, pink typically is a switched 12V source off of the key, that is it is hot with 12V only when the key switch is on. Red is hot 12V all of the time and black is ground. Brown is hot 12V when the key is in the run or start position and it goes to the line side of the ballast resistor and blue appears to be connected to the turn signal system... Al

Switching the two pinks shouldn't matter, they go to the same place. The brown wire should go on the fuel gauge and comes from the fuel sending unit. The blue wire connects to the temp gauge and comes from the temperature sensor on the engine. I hope the smoke wasn't from the gauges. The fuel sending unit can read 0-30 ohms based on fuel level, so switching the blue and brown wires could be an issue.

EDIT: Just came upon a picture from Willcox that shows you which is which.
