Default Tach Drive

Apparently the tach drive in my distributor is broken, maybe stripped. It is a 340 HP 1963 327. How big of an expense am I looking at for parts? All is original.

Thanks, Phil Swanson

Parts wise the mainshaft and tach drive gear. Perhaps $100. You should inspect the housing area where the tach drive gear brass end faces . The gear may have drilled into the housing causing the mainshaft gear and tach drive gear to mis align. If thats is the reason for drive gear to strip you will also need to fit a bushing inside the housing to re align the two gears.

Thanks for that. The PO told me it has broken before so it will probably need the bushing treatment. Is there anyone out there that does these as a specialty?

that happened to my 66 327 important to dismantle and clean and lubricate the tach drive and make sure that the tach drive cable is replaced at the same time

I dont have experience with any of these two but they come with good references.

It's not a difficult repair to make yourself. I did the one in my '63 some years ago, when it still belonged to the friend who later sold me the car. This is an ideal opportunity to give the distributor a thorough rehab. A few forum members have posted how-to instructions that are very helpful.

Live well,
