"Go up from underneath with a long screwdriver or piece of broomstick and push rearward on the lever that sticks down just inboard of where the harnesses plug into the connectors on the engine side of the fuse block, and the hood will open. The lever is shown in the photo below. " From a post by JohnZ
The shop was able to reach up from under to get to the release. There was enough cable to re-attache. Just wondering if I should go ahead and change out to a new cable.
If your cable snapped, and a part is still pinched in the brass barrel, you may need an entire hood release assembly. If it just slipped out of the retainer you can make a permanent fix. Since I had mine slip out, and left me in the same position you describe, I doubled the retainer then made my own. I and others don't trust them. See the pics
The key to keep the barrel nut from slipping off is simple. Place the barrel nut on the cable, tighten the small bolt, THEN bend the cable 90* just past the barrel nut. This way, if the barrel nut lossens up, the bend in the wire will keep the nut from falling off.

Now after the shop adjusted the wire it’s pretty tight when I pull the release. It had broken and they re-attached with the remaining wire. The drivers side of hood is not locking in the hole. It pops back with a bump.
After my hood release cable malfunctioned twice, I ran a thin cable from the hood release lever to the front of the car behind the grill. If the problem happens again, I can reach behind the grill and release the hood latch with that cable.
Does such a trick/tool exist for a 1960 without removing the splash shield and contorting my body up there?
Been there before, and now have double cable nuts on a twisted over...but still nervous about closing hood, I kept mine unlatched for a while too.
Thanks!
you think this is the correct cable? I need the one that goes from under my dash to the release under hood.
I'm not aware of just the cable part of the hood release being available, maybe someone does it. The cable is crimped into the handle end, thereby making replacement almost impossible. You may be in for a purchase of the full handle assembly. Dennis
If you need to pull hard to release the latches something is wrong.
Our 66 required one heck of a hard pull to release the latches and the previous owner recommended not latching it. After adjusting the latch locations and pin length it was a little better. Removing the old hard grease from the latches and replacing it with some synthetic #2 made it so you can release the latches super easy.
