Just bought a ‘66 with the 327/300. Drove it home from the dealer yesterday, about 10 miles, pulled into the garage and it immediately puked the coolant out the overflow. I monitored the temp all the way home and it never exceeded 180. Today I pulled the thermostat and it tested good but I replaced it anyway. Took it out to get it up to temp and when I got home it puked out the coolant again. I am suspecting air in the system. Has anyone else seen this in a C2? I have had newer Vette’s that had a bleed valve in the system to purge the air out. Any suggestions appreciated.
Have you verified the operating temp at the thermostat housing with a IR gun? Also, it sounds like the system has too much coolant in it. The overflow tank should only be half full cold. Dennis
First step, check coolant level in expansion tank.
Second, verify gauge accuracy to actual temperature of coolant.
Third, try a different pressure cap, maybe it's weak or rated to low.
Post a pic of your coolant tank and the hoses going to it. I helped a guy whose car had your symptoms--the hoses to the tank were reversed. Let's see your set-up.
