Has anyone ever laid the aluminum replacement compressor next to the original Frigidaire/GM compressor and done a visual comparison? What exactly are the visual differences? I have been told they are difficult to tell apart when the replacement is used with a reproduction decal. Anybody had experience doing this and if so what is your advice? Thanks in advance for any knowledge or images you care to share.
There are A6 replacement compressors and, then, there are aluminum replacement compressors that will adapt the factory hoses, etc...but, I don't believe there is an aluminum A6 compressor. The Pro6Ten is an aluminum body compressor that bolts directly to the factory brackets and fitting lines...but, it doesn't really look like a factory compressor (see picture below).
If you're going for an "original" look you'll want to get another A6 and put your decals on it. My Pro6Ten with a oil sling shield attached.
The replacement A6 you are seeking is made by ALMA. It is called APCO Brand (Alma Products Company). It is a metric replacement for the A6 with improved internals and sealing. Put a reproduction decal on it and (almost) no one will know the difference.
I think the biggest visual difference is that the aluminum compressor does not have the extended belly on the bottom. The A-6 uses this to increase the amount of oil for the system. Jerry
