I have side pipes on my 65 BB. The first set were used stock pipes from a 67 Corvette that lasted a 7 years. Was told the baffles are loose because it sounded like there were marbles floating around inside each pipe. I replaced them with a brand new aftermarket set, they lasted about 4 years. Same problem of loose marbles only worse than the stock GM pipes.
Does anybody have a diagram of how the side pipe was actually constructed? Has anybody ever cut one apart to see how theses baffles come loose? Does anyone have any idea if you can fix theses?
Getting ridiculous that these pipes have to be changed out every so many years.
I think basically the inner core is secured by the crimps on the outer tube. You can use a video inspection borescope in the outlet and see the last crimp. How many miles do you drive a year? I'm surprised they are going bad on you so frequently unless you drive the car 3 or 4 days or more a week regularly. I don't have that many miles on mine but they are 25 years old and still fine.
DansYellow66, I do drive my car as much as possible, 3-6 times a week, love driving it. I did the HotRod Power tour back in 2018 with my 65 so lots of miles. Don't know why the inner core comes loose. The last set were aftermarket ones supposed built to GM specs. I'Ve had 2 different sets of 67 side pipes which could have a ton of miles over the years therefore come apart easily.
Is there a way to rebuild the actual chambered part of the side pipe? Trying to find NOS pipes is simply ridiculous for the price their asking.
